This deciduous shrub grows well in full to part sun and is drought tolerant once established. Bare tangled branches display beautiful blooms in late winter or early spring before the dark green foliage emerges in the spring. There are several varieties to choose from that will brighten any landscape.
Yucca 'Color Gaurd'
This variegated yucca has a bright yellow stripe down the center of each sward-shaped leaf. The bold color of this yucca does not tend to fade in the heat and in the cooler weather the leaves display a beautiful pink tint. During the summer a stalk of white bell shaped flowers stand tall above the foliage. This yucca can be used as a focal point in the landscape, a container, or used in a mixed perennial bed.
Forsythia
This deciduous shrub leads the spring bloomers with a burst of yellow flowers. The bright yellow flowers cover the branches from top to bottom. Forsythia is a large fast growing shrub. To maintain the size it can be pruned in the spring after blooming.
Mexican Feather Grass
This small graceful grass is drought tolerant. In the spring Mexican Feather Grass emerges with slender green leaves that dance in the slightest breeze. During the heat of the summer the green foliage turns a beautiful blond color that last through the winter. Plant this grass in a mass planting, incorporated into a rock garden or in a container.
Helleborus
This shade loving perennial is a tough, drought tolerant plant that requires little maintenance. The large dark green palmate leaves are evergreen and form a dense mound about twelve inches tall and wide. Flowers emerge over the foliage and begin to bloom in January and last for several months. Use this great plant to spruce up some dull winter areas, plant as a border, or mixed with herbaceous perennials for interest year round.
