Southwest has been in continuous operation since 1940. During that time there have been 4 changes in ownership. Curtis Taber, the 3rd owner, began employment with Southwest in 1964. He grew up farming in Van Horn, Texas and received a degree in Agronomy from Texas A&M University. Through out the late 60's and 70's he worked as a Landscape Architect installing landscapes all over Dallas/Ft. Worth and North Texas. In 1980 he purchased the nursery outright and moved it to its current location on Sandy Lake Road in Carrollton.
In 1983 Curtis opened up Southwest at it's present location and thus began a new era. Southwest started in Carrollton with 6 acres and operated retail, wholesale and landscape installation. As a Landscape Architect Curtis learned the hard way how difficult it was for a Landscape Professional to find unique and quality material for their clients. His dream was to own a nursery with everything a person could want or need for their landscape at one location. Through out the 80's and 90's Southwest grew in acres, products and employees and worked tirelessly to achieve that goal. By the end of the 90's Southwest was operating on 27 acres and employed 50 people. Southwest was becoming known by the community to have the largest selection and best quality of plant material around.
In 1999 Curtis retired and his son Steve took over operations. The business of serving the needs of Landscape Professionals had become the central focus of Southwest. So on January 1, 2000, Steve opened up as Southwest Wholesale Nursery and thus began another era of the nursery. Since that time Southwest has added more products and services with the desire to increase their ability to serve the Landscape Professional.
Today, Southwest is operating on 40 acres and employs 75 people. We operate with a hands on mentality, and work daily to increase our ability to supply the Landscape Professional with the products and services they need to complete their jobs.
Many of Southwest's employees are celebrating 10, 15, 20, and 25 years with Southwest which says more about our company than anything else.
